EU picks DVB-H(not FLO) (7/18/2007)
As expected, the European Commission has decided to favor the DVB-H standard and will add it to its list of standards this month. The commission is calling for a single broadcasting technology standard because it wants to accelerate mobile TV efforts across Europe.

The Mobile DTV Alliance, an industry advocate (pushing DVB-H as the mobile TV tech) comprised supported by Motorola and Nokia, among others, believes it has found the right price consumers will pay for viewing TV on cell phones: a flat $20 a month.

U.S. consumers are willing to pay enough for watching TV on mobile phones to justify what it would cost carriers to build a new broadcast network to guarantee quality service, an industry group said Thursday. The winning formula for mobile TV in the United States is high-quality video and service and flat rates of about $20 a month for unlimited viewing, the Mobile DTV Alliance said in its latest white paper. To meet those standards, the alliance advocates building a separate broadcast network, which would cost a carrier between $500 million and $2 billion.

TV on the move Hoping to ring in a new era of television for the mobile phone, the Mobile DTV Alliance met this week in San Francisco for a conference on its progress in promoting a standard for mobile TV. Formed in January with its organizing office in San Ramon, the group's objective is to promote the adoption of mobile TV technology based on the DVB-H (digital video broadcast-handheld) standard, and to bring mobile satellite TV to consumers in North America. It says it is working to "promote an open value chain offering the market more than one mobile DTV alternative."

As mobile TV gears up in earnest, operators and handset vendors are finally coming to grips with a slew of problems that are impeding its uptake—including some of their own making. Among the challenges cited at last September's IBC, Europe's largest broadcast technology conference, are a persistent lack of interoperability, QoS issues and a non-existent certification process for any of the handful of competing mobile-TV standards.

The Mobile Digital TV Alliance unveils DVB-H guidelines (9/13/2006)
The Mobile Digital TV Alliance (MDTVA), a consortium whose members include Microsoft, Motorola, and Nokia, has published implementation guidelines for the Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld standard. The group hopes publication of the guidelines will set standards for Mobile TV on handheld devices, eliminating confusion in the marketplace. The guidelines are flexible depending on the type of network or the content to be delivered. With the standard now set, US markets could see compatible mobile TV broadcasts as early as 2007.
