What is the Mobile DTV Alliance?

The Mobile DTV Alliance is an open industry consortium that focuses on promoting the best practices and open standards to deliver premium-quality broadcast television to mobile devices. The alliance includes leading companies from across the mobile business system and entertainment value chain.

Why was the Mobile DTV Alliance formed?

The Mobile DTV Alliance was formed to promote the best practices and open standards that deliver premium-quality digital broadcast television to mobile devices, to accelerate DVB-H and ATSC-M/H development and deployment in North America and to promote common, global set of service layer technologies.

How will this alliance help me?

In general, the Alliance provides members the ability to influence the development of the mobile TV ecosystem in a direction favorable to your company, as well as early access to information on the market and the Alliance's plans.

For operators and carriers, you have the ability the ability to guide the Alliance to develop an ecosystem that you can adopt on your own frequency or outsource, as well as access to early insight so that you can plan my own or outsourced network ahead of time. Additionally, you get assurance that all members are driving components of an interoperable mobile TV broadcast networks.

For content owners and providers, the Alliance helps you create and format content appropriate for mobile TV, and you gain insight into how mobile content will be used and viewed.

Will carriers be involved with the alliance?

Carriers will be invited to participate in a special advisory council, where they will have the opportunity guide the Mobile DTV Alliance toward developing an interoperable mobile TV ecosystem in a way that will be easy for them to deploy and generate revenue either from an outsourced/third party network or their own network.

What are the benefits of DVB-H?

DVB-H is an open industry standard that has become the predominant technology used to deploy mobile TV services around the world. DVB-H has over 100 companies developing or deploying services, components and devices based on the standard. Through this large ecosystem, DVB-H has a competitive environment which fosters lower costs and spurs innovation. The DVB-H standard delivers rapid, cost-effective deployments by leveraging existing infrastructure.

What are the benefits of ATSC-M/H?

ATSC-M/H is an open industry standard that is currently being developed by ATSC. ATSC-M/H enjoys support from almost all U.S. terrestrial broadcasters and other companies developing or deploying services, components and devices based on the standard. Through the unique position in the U.S., ATSC-M/H has a competitive environment which fosters lower costs and spurs innovation. The ATSC-M/H standard delivers rapid, cost-effective deployments by leveraging already deployed ATSC infrastructure in North America.

Other mobile digital television transmission technologies have been available for sometime. How does MDTV fit into this picture?

We expect to see several different business models for mobile DTV. One model includes outsourcing the entire mobile DTV network and independent broadcasters will provide an end-to-end solution for the operator. In the other model, the network is operator owned and uses the existing infrastructure and owned spectrum. The Mobile DTV Alliance addresses the needs of both business models by creating an interoperable, end-to-end mobile TV ecosystem.
